My Morose And Grieving Pals

| | Comments (10)

Hiatus? What, me? You think I'd go all AWOL on your just because it's the end of 10th week and I've got big, big tests to study for? Heavens no. It's just been made clear to me, moreso of recent, t hat despite this being a public and free venue for my thoughts I can't just go and say whatever I want. I never thought of this as being a particularly offensive website, but alas there are some things that always seem to get some people in a bind.

So I guess all that is left is to tell stories here, and even then, not all of them. Thoughts and opinions are for free people. The tricky thing with stories is, the best ones are almost always embellished to some extent. I happen to consider myself a hell of a story-teller, which comes with it a certain amount of embellishing and lying and that is something you should walk away with. My name is Dan (not a lie), and I am a liar. If I am talking to you, and you are smiling, you should immediately assume that I'm saying what you want to hear. There is no necessity for everyone to know the whole truth about anything and I am more than willing to feed you an artificially-sweetened half-truth if I think it's all you need or all you deserve.

On a more uplifting note, I love each of you for taking the time out of your day to check in on my life.

And now for a story.

Rose-Hulman Basketball finished up their season this week on a downer 0-2 for the week. The home game on Wednesday had some crazy energy behind it but we still lost by a few (by no means was it a domination). The last game of the season was at DePauw, which happens to be a rival of ours. If DePauw happens to be reading this (likelihood approaching zero), let me just say that you have the most ununified team spirit I've seen in a while now. We were the away team and we mustered up at least 100-120 students who were coordinated and stood for the entire duration of the game. Sure, you guys had some folks behind the glass on one side of the court, but your numbers were embarassing for a home-game. We won't even talk about how you (men only) were dressed so gay (not the derrogatory, the literal) you were turned down for the cast of Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Yeah, DePauw might have one the "game", but where were the fans, really?

Other than that I wish I had something more interesting to tempt you with. I've only got a couple of finals this week thanks to a humanities class and senior design. And since I said (typed) the words "senior design" I feel I need to explode in a quick rant about that little thorn in my paw. I'm absolutely fed up with about half of my team because of their complete inability to contribute to the project. At first I thought it was because they didn't know that they were useless and could use that as an excuse, but now I'm pretty certain they've realized that and are showing even less effort intentionally. But oh, thank god, I was able to get us a totally working prototype over the course of the last month or so. If you really give even half of a shit what the project actually is, just go over here and read through some of the paperwork. It's absolutely enthralling.

I've got some job news for you, should you care. I've got a plant trip to a company called "Lutron" in Pennsylvania over break which should be fun. I believe I'm interviewing there for a full-time position that would start in December. Also, I just received an offer from "Logikos" out of Fort Wayne for a summer-internship position. They want an response "ASAP", but I'm still waiting to see what Lutron and TRW want. TRW is an automotive place in Marshall, Illinois that I have on good authority that they are interested in yours-truly because of some Visual Basic experience. I guess I'll have to have a good deal of this wrapped up by the middle of March. Scary, eh? Gettin' out so soon? Where are my Deans at? Aren't you guys getting the hell out of dodge early too? Grad schools, I remember reading once upon a time (hint hint).

That's about all the real news fit to print. I'll be back sometime on Thursday at which point my only plans are my plant trip and sitting around waiting for you to call. I promise I will not be making bi-daily visits to Westerville. And if you believe that, I'll tell you another.

You are the best. :-)

I'm getting out soon, but reading about your opportunities for full time positions still gave me hives. The law school search is in full swing. Columbia semi-rejected me (they're going to look at my application again in June, but as of yet haven't rejected, accepted, or wait-listed me). I'm planning to post the full report on my livejournal after Harvard gets their act together and sends me my rejection letter and hopefully after Boston U decides to accept me. At any rate, it's likely I'll be at the University of Michigan or Georgetown next year. I was home visiting U of M this weekend, and the school is beautiful (a lot like Hogwarts, for those of you H.P.-inclined folks) but the town is itty bitty and I'm not sure that I could stand it.

Dan I want to check out Attack of the Bacon Robots when you get back.

elaine kratz is working for lutron this summer :-) its real close to her house!
good luck!

I'm glad the site's back up! And I'm nearly certain that your description of DePauw exactly describes every Drew attempt at athletics. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. Like Theresa, I broke out into a cold sweat reading about JOB OFFERS, and INTERVIEWS. I've been applying like mad for various federal jobs, but I've gotten no response from most of them and rejected from one. I guess I should have gone to engineer school? I'm applying to library school at Kent State, just in case, and I'm taking the Foreign Service Test in April to see if the government might see fit to send me somewhere cool like Libya to work in an embassy. That one is pretty much a long-shot. I start my State Dept internship on Monday though!

Keep us updated, I want to live vicariously through your success. ;)

Everyone knows that Libya is totally a party embassy.

A word of adivce on TRW from someone who deals with automotive suppliers. Make sure to note how much of there business involves the Big Three. If it is a significant portion, be very worried about job security. The Big Three are gradually outsourcing there suppliers.

can i call dibs on your ADES file for next quarter?
:-)

btw- wireless sucks here..lol

Dan, let me just say that I love the picture of the testicle. It really adds some variety to your blog!
